KBC Finance and Investment Seminar

On 23 October 2004, Korea Business Consultants led a delegation of 17 fund managers and brokers to Pyongyang, DPRK, for an Investment Seminars and factory visits, and to gain a general impression of the country. The Business and Investment Seminar was definitely the first of its kind held in the DPRK and proved an enormous success.
On Monday, 25 October, KBC delivered a seminar that focused on the investment climate in the DPRK, the new investment laws, a presentation on setting up joint ventures, and include a Q&A session delivered by experienced businessmen who have been working in the DPRK –including the General Manager of the only foreign-invested joint venture bank and the Project Manager who has been working with the DPRK for over 10 years.

The venue was on the ground floor of the Yanggakdo Hotel in a 97-seat conference auditorium. One feature that added to the seminar was the simultaneous interpretation between Korean and English (delivered through ear-pieces) that allowed the Seminar hosts to speak in their native tongue.

The seminar was the most efficient way for the delegates to get up to date on the investment climate, investment methods, and the priority industries for investment and to get a general understanding of the legal framework that foreign investors and businesses would be operating in.

A question and answer session ended the Seminar with 3 foreign experts and the Korean partners present on the panel. The participants had brunch with the Swedish Ambassador to the DPRK, visited the Heavy Industry/ Light Industry and Consumer Goods Exhibition, visited the T’ongil Street Free Market, a high-tech engineering company, the SEK Animation House, the Textile Factory, Pyongsu Pharmaceutical Company, a brewery, and also enjoyed the local circus. The end of the visit was marked by a reception at the hotel with 70 locals that included ambassadors, foreign and local businessmen and investors.

Future Delegations

Due to the success of the October seminar, KBC will be holding further delegations and seminars over the coming months, starting at the end of January. There will be one a month on various themes, and then a large Investment conference scheduled for May 2005.
All future planned delegations are from Saturday to Tuesday with the seminar on Monday. We can arrange extensions of stay, especially for visits to mining sites.
